The Story

Some beauty cannot be created without fire.

This piece began as clay — shaped and hand-carved before being placed into a traditional pit-firing process where fire, smoke, ash and the elements leave their own marks upon the surface.

No two firings are ever quite the same. The colours, textures and markings that emerge become part of the story of the piece.

I then wove the flax rope by hand, creating a simple way for the artwork to hang and become part of the home.

The result is a piece that celebrates transformation — the beauty that can emerge from earth, fire and ash.

Beauty Through Ash is a one-of-a-kind handmade ceramic artwork created from clay, hand-carved and transformed through the ancient process of pit firing.

There is something wonderfully raw about this piece. Its organic form and hand-carved details are complemented by the natural markings created during the firing process, where fire, smoke and ash become part of the artwork itself.

Rather than trying to control every mark and colour, pit firing allows the elements to leave their own impression. This means that every piece carries the character of its own firing — making Beauty Through Ash a truly original work of art.

The ceramic form is complemented by a handwoven flax rope, carefully created to allow the artwork to hang vertically on the wall. The natural flax adds another layer of texture and connects the ceramic piece beautifully with the materials and craftsmanship that are at the heart of Artiflax.

At approximately 95cm high and 25cm wide, this is a striking piece of wall art with a beautiful vertical presence.
